Inspired by the colorful patterns seen in 1960’s kitchens, I created my own typeface composed of identical modular units and formed a systematic alphabet. The eccentric patterns on vintage tile, wallpaper, and countertops influenced my decision to incorporate a unique star shape into each letter. The stars’ resemblance to a spark inspired my packaging idea. I created a matchbox, having the ‘i’ in the word ‘ignite’ double as an actively striking match. The star serves as a distinguishable unit and conceptual anchor, unifying this typeface, and establishing a successfully cohesive set.
